Help make Sustainable Change in Your Community!

The 2023 People and Planet Challenge is an exciting opportunity for middle and high school students to develop their leadership skills while inspiring sustainable change in their community. Students will learn about air quality, waste management, and more! Challenge activities can be completed as a class, in small groups/clubs, or even individually.

Participate in Challenges and Run a Campaign 
Become a sustainability leader in your community! By researching local and global sustainability topics, you will learn how people have impacted our environment and then use that knowledge to launch a sustainability campaign.
​All challenge materials are available in English and Spanish.

Part 1: People and Planet
 Build your environmental knowledge and discover which sustainability topic you’re passionate about by learning how they impact our environment and air quality.

Use an online tool to understand local environmental issues and how history continues to impact air quality today.

Part 3: Vision and Launch
Become a sustainability leader! Plan and launch your campaign to improve air quality and sustainability in your community.

Win Prize Money to Move Your Sustainability Vision Forward
Throughout the challenge, there will be a number of opportunities to win money to forward your vision for a more sustainable community! During the campaign, we will distribute 10 gift cards to help pay for campaign materials (see below for more information). Following the final submission deadline, top campaigns will be eligible to win money for their school, classroom, or club to continue supporting the sustainability efforts you started during the challenge.

Gift Cards
The first five students that submit Part 1 by October 6, 2023 will each receive a $25 Amazon gift card to help fund their campaign launch in Part 3. The first five new students that submit Part 2 by October 13, 2023 will each receive a $25 Amazon gift card to help fund their campaign launch in Part 3.

Please note, if you win a gift card for submitting Part 1, then you are ineligible to win a second gift card.
Certificate
Receive a Sustainability Specialist Certificate
Additionally, each student that completes all three parts of the People and Planet Challenge will receive a certificate from SEI’s Energize Schools program via email.

Students created campaigns  to educate their communities on the dangers of fast fashion and pollution, to advocate for water conservation, and even to start a school garden.

Spearheaded by their co-leaders, Timothy Lee and Trinity Ly, Summit Shasta‘s Environment Club engaged in a four-day project to quantify their school’s waste sorting practices and educate school stakeholders on the importance of recycling and composting.

Prize Eligibility 

* ​The 2023 People and Planet Challenge is open to all middle school and high school students, teachers, and administrators. Anyone that completes all four challenges will receive a Sustainability Specialist Certificate! However, to be eligible for the prizes, your school must be within San Diego County or the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), which includes: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southwestern Solano, and southern Sonoma counties.
