Solar Water Heating (Grades 9-12)
This curriculum is comprised of five lessons, and the unit is designed for 2-3 weeks of instruction, depending on the final project. There are additional research opportunities and optional activities written into the curriculum that may be used to extend the unit past three weeks. In Lesson 1, students learn about the causes, consequences, and opportunities of climate change. In Lesson 2, students learn about the science of heat and the different ways heat is transferred. In Lesson 3, students study different types of solar water heaters and how to increase their efficiency. In Lesson 4, students design and construct a prototype of a solar water collector. In Lesson 5, students can explore career opportunities in the water and renewable energy industries.
- Includes five interactive lessons designed for the high school level (grades 9-12)
- Provides hands-on training in climate science, heat transfer, and solar thermal energy
- Instructs students on how to build a solar water heater using a box and insulation materials they have found to be the most effective
- Addresses Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core State Standards, and Career Technical Education Standards- Energy, Environment, and Utilities
