Biomimicry: Engineering Inspired by Nature (Grades 9-12)
This curriculum is an exploration of biomimicry and the design process. Biomimicry is a method of design that looks to nature for inspiration. The core principle of biomimicry is observing how nature adapts, learning from it, and applying nature’s adaptations to new engineering designs. In this unit, students draw inspiration from nature to design a cultural, technological, or physiological innovation that will help life as we know it survive the rapidly changing conditions on Earth.
This curriculum is comprised of four lessons designed to provide roughly eleven hours of instructional time, but instructors are free to provide more time for students to work on their biomimicry design projects if they desire. The first three lessons contextualize the need for biomimetic designs by introducing human impacts on Earth (Lesson 1), the consequences of climate change for the natural world (Lesson 2), and how species have adapted to survive in their environments (Lesson 3). Finally, students apply what they have learned in a biomimicry design project (Lesson 4).
