Engineering Aquatic Ecosystems (Grades 9-12)
The SEI Engineering Aquatic Ecosystems Curriculum guides students through the design engineering challenge of developing a self-sustaining ecosystem supporting at least five different living organisms for three weeks with only light energy as an input. This project is designed to be highly self-directed and encourages students to identify problems and find solutions through self-guided research. Based on their research, students will choose living organisms, design the ecosystem, troubleshoot problems, and test solutions until the desired goal is achieved.
This curriculum package includes:
- Lessons covering ecosystems, trophic levels, food webs, the nitrogen cycle, ecosystem services, engineered ecosystems, and climate change impacts
- A project guiding students in creating their own, self-sustaining aquatic ecosystem, including a creation of an Ecosystem Logbook and final presentation
- Hands-on activities to explore ecosystems and water quality testing
- Practical applications in math, chemistry, technical drafting, and science to understand dynamics of ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems engineering
- A unit pre and post-test to assess comprehension and retention of material presented. Administer the test before beginning the unit and upon completion to assess student learning outcomes
- Coverage of Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core ELA Standards, and Career Technical Education Standards
