Teacher-Facing Curriculum
SEI’s teacher-facing distance learning units will fit into many subject’s scope and sequence. These units can be implemented independently or as a series. To give your students a breath of understanding about energy and the environment, we recommend teaching SEI’s Introduction to Climate Change, Energy Auditing, and Renewable Energy units.
Introduction to Climate Change
The Introduction to Climate Change Unit provides students with hands-on learning activities to explore the causes and consequences of climate change. In this unit students will learn about the fundamental scientific processes of climate change through modelling carbon movement through reservoirs and the greenhouse gas effect. Students who complete the Introduction to Climate Change unit will be equipped with the tools needed to act as climate leaders in their classrooms and schools.

Introduction to Energy Auditing
In this unit, students learn how to conduct a school or personal energy audit. Students will complete a series of activities, including a plug-load audit and investigation of opportunities for energy conservation and efficiency. Practical applications in math and science to understand the economic and environmental benefits of energy use reduction will also be covered.

Renewable Energy (Hydro Power)
Students will research the environmental, economic, and social impacts of renewable energy sources and will debate energy source pros and cons. Then students will use the design thinking method to design and build a water wheel using upcycled materials.

Air Quality
Teach students about criteria air pollutants and the environmental justice impacts of poor air quality, how to create “Smog in a Jar”, and engage students in the policymaking process. Distance activities include “Mapping your Neighborhood” and “Create your own Air Quality Monitor” projects.

Watersheds and Public Water Systems
In this unit, students engage in a hands on exploration of watersheds and public water systems through activities including watershed modeling, constructing a water filter, and ArcGIS mapping. Students create a StoryMap using water quality data and other research on their local watershed and then take action to become stewards of their watershed.

Ecological Economics and Climate Policy
In this unit, students explore the relationships between economics, policy, and climate change. They apply fundamental economic principles to current environmental issues, consider current strategies for managing natural resources, and analyze the pros and cons of various policy strategies related to climate change.
Student-Facing Curriculum
SEI’s student-facing distance learning curriculum is designed to get your students thinking about sustainability across a range of topics from air quality to green transportation. All student-facing curriculum is ready to share with your learners and includes background content and engaging activities. The student-facing curriculum can be implemented with or without internet access.
Sustainability Specialist Certificate (Spanish/English)
Boost your resume and demonstrate your knowledge in sustainability with a Sustainability Specialist Certificate. Students who complete all four bilingual challenges will receive a Badgr certificate from SEI’s Energize Schools program via email.
